South Africans have proved once again that comedy is the best choice of genre when it comes to deciding what film to watch for either date night or family night. The number 1 film this week is a sequel to a twenty year old comedy classic film Dumb and Dumber.
Last week`s number 1, Interstellar drops one position down to the runner up position. The Times Media Films release was screened on 90 screens locally and managed to bring in over R1,23 million locally in its sophomore week.
At number 3, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arrived on 79 screens, down by 7 from last week`s 86 screens. The CGI driven film brought back over R674 thousand on box office in its 5th week on circuit. The film has claimed to be popular with South African audiences as it claims the honours of being the top 10 title on circuit with highest life to date box office with R12 128 142. The film is distributed by United International Pictures.
The box office then sees an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs` Tarzan of the Apes landing at the number 4 position with Tarzan 3D distributed by Times Media Films. The CGI driven film brings in over R662 thousand on the South African box office. The film screened on 75 cinemas locally.
Rounding up the top 5, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day brings in over R653 thousand on the box office. The Ster-Kinekor release was screened on 48 cinemas in its 3rd week.
With no signs of slowing down Times Media Films rules the top ten market share with 50% , Sterk-Kinekor and Crystal Brook tied at 20% each and United International Pictures with 10%.
Next week top 5 contenders will come from God Help The Girl, No Good Deed, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, and The Grand Seduction
