BOX OFFICE REPORT: The ‘Hunger Games’ rebellion sweeps the country and takes top spot


This week’s box office was fueled by one of the year`s most anticipated release, ‘The Hunger Games : Mocking Jay – Part 1’ which has slayed the South African box office to claim top spot by a huge margin . Taking a year back in the history of the film franchise, ‘Catching Fire’ bested as the year’s 13th box office hit in 2013 therefore a strong box office presence was expected for Mockingjay Part 1

The Times Media Films release opened to 98 cinemas including a nation-wide IMAX showing that brought in an incredulous amount of over R4.89 million.

‘Dumber and Dumber To’ falls to the runner-up position after dethroning Interstellar from the top spot last week. The Crystal Brook release made over R1.20 million in its second week on circuit whilst playing on 81 cinemas, that figure being the same as last week.

The latter film Interstellar is experiencing a consistent decline since last ruling the box office three weeks ago. The films brought in over R848 thousand, playing on 73 cinemas nationwide down by 17 from its sophomore weeks 80 screens. The film is distributed by Times Media Films.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day experiences one of two, box office position inclines in the ‘top ten’ as Annabelle returns at number 10. The former film brought in just over R551 thousand in its fourth week on the chart.  The Ster-Kinekor release played on 45 cinemas down by 3 from last week`s 48.

Rounding up the top 5 is Tarzan 3D bringing in over R492 thousand from 74 cinemas which is a drop by 1 from 75 in its debut week. The film is distributed by Times Media Films which rules the top 10 by 60% followed by Ster-Kinekor with 20% and a tie between United International Pictures and Crystal Brook with 10% each.
