Box Office Report: ‘Transformers’ holding steady at number 1

In a tight race to number 1, Transformers: Age of Extinction holds on to the pole position for an unprecedented third consecutive week on the Box Office chart. The film marks the longest stay at number 1 since The Vent started the box office report. The film distributed by United International Pictures, made over R2.52 million  in its third week on circuit, playing on 82 screens nation wide.

The film`s biggest challenger came from the Times Media Films distributed Dawn of the Planet of  the Apes, which narrowly missed the top spot by a mere amount. The film which was the most screened film in the top ten with 90 screens nation wide made over R2.41 million in debut week.

Blended, last weeks number 2 dips to number 3 with over R1,64 million made in its second week on the run. The film was played on 78 screens nation wide, up by 2 compared to last week`s 76. This makes the Times Media Films the only one in the top 10 to see an increase in cinema screens.

At number 4 the chart has popular animation, How To Train Your Dragon 2 with over R1.56 million made in its 4 week. The film also distributed by Times Media Films was played on 89 screens nation wide as it spends its first full month on the box office top 5.

Rounding up the list, the chart has the college-detective comedy 22 Jump Street coming in with over R1.30 million in its first month on the chart. The film distributed by Ster-Kinekor was played on 72 cinemas nation wide.

This week Times Media Films maintains its ‘top 10′ market share with 60% percent of the films in the top 10,Sterkinekor remains stationary at number 2 with 20% and United International Pictures and CB are tied at number 3  with 10% each.

The overall weekend gross for the top 5 films is standing at R9 451 772 million for the week/weekend June 20-22 down 22.2% from last week.
