Cartoon Network is bringing back an updated version of “The Powerpuff Girls” in 2016, chief content officer Rob Sorcher announced at the 2014 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas on Monday. The original series, following the adventures of Professor Utonium’s Buttercup, Blossom and Bubbles as they save the city of Townsville from destruction, ran for six seasons between 1998 and 2005, winning two Emmy Awards.

The girls returned earlier this year for a successful special, which featured Ringo Starr; next, they will appear in a rebooted TV series.

“Powerpuff Girls,” created by Craig McCracken and powered by sugar, spice and Chemical X, is one of Cartoon Network’s top-grossing brands to date, with more than $2.5 billion in retail sales.

“As the original ambassador of ‘girl power,’ The Powerpuff Girls brand continues to resonate with people of all ages and there is tremendous excitement around introducing Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup to a new generation,” said Pete Yoder, vice president of consumer products for North America, Cartoon Network Enterprises. “With proven success and great content plans in place, there’s so much potential that we’re looking forward to explore with our licensing partners in the coming weeks.”
