Ster Kinekor is releasing an upcoming film The Giver releasing 12 September 2014 ,is based on a science fiction novel written by Lois Lowry, author of over twenty novels and two time winner of the Newbery Medal for The Giver and Number the Stars.

The film stars Jeff Bridges as the Giver: the sole keeper of all the community’s memories, and Meryl Streep as the chief elder in the society.  The cast includes Brenton Thwaites, Katie Holmes and Taylor Swift to mention a few.

The Giver takes place in a society where adherence to a social program called “the sameness” has eliminated conflict, poverty, and crime a young boy Jonas (Thwaites) is chosen to learn from an elderly man (Bridges) about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world, and his world is opened up as he is suddenly able to understand the meaning of color and emotion. But with Jonas’ position also comes the burden of knowing the horrifying secret behind his society and what it takes to remain as it is.

After many years of its completion, the book has been anticipated to come onto the big screen. Now filmed in South Africa one of our producers worked on this film Genevieve Hofmeyr, she is hailed by the Hollywood Reporter as one of the three most influential women in South African Cinema today.

Tylor Swift says,

“I still can’t believe I shot in South Africa and shot all my scenes with Jeff Bridges. It was unreal…I just tried to work as hard as I could and just throw myself into that environment as much as I possibly could.

‘It was really long hours and it was a lot of preparation and getting into character and all that, but it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Honestly.”

The Giver was filmed in the Mother City and as South African media, it is indeed an honor to have academy award winners such as Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges grace our shores.
